Psalm 137 was written about the Babylonian exile. God’s people were captive. Broken, they sat down and wept by the waters of Babylon.

Psalm 136 includes twenty-six verses and uses the phrase “…for his steadfast love endures forever” twenty-six times. Repetition is a powerful literary tool.

Defended and loved, we will realize in eternity that all who worship lesser gods are trusting in idols.

Brokenness shines a light on redemption. God’s goodness to reach down to us is most clearly seen when we are at our lowest. He redeems our life story.

I have always sought to be committed to unity, but loss has cleared my eyes even more. Insignificant arguments or issues fall away, and unity’s importance rises within my mind.

The author of this psalm reaches back to the covenant and requests that God not turn his face away for the sake of David, his servant.

Similar to a weaned child, the soul of the humble is calmed and quieted. In the throes of loss, it’s good to reject pride and embrace humility.

In a broken world full of brokenness and broken people, the gospel speaks directly to the problem. Brokenness is defeated. We do not cry out because we deserve mercy; we cry out because he does not mark our iniquities.

If you’re facing loss, attack, pain, or any form of brokenness know this: the difficulties you face are temporary. Those cords will be cut. The haughty attacker will be put to shame.

Men and women who fear the Lord actually learn a paradox. Fear God. Obey God. Follow God. Embrace and walk in his ways. Blessing is yours.
